Traces of Castelculier: Stones, Workshops & the Green Edges of Agen

Castelculier, located just east of Agen, is a rural commune with remarkably deep historical layers. The main archaeological site, the Gallo‑Roman Villa of Lamarque, reveals an expansive 2nd–4th‑century residential and thermal complex, once belonging to wealthy inhabitants of ancient Aginnum. Surrounding the villa are traces of Merovingian necropolises and remnants of medieval fortifications, recalling Castelculier’s former role as a fortified settlement. The commune also features two Romanesque churches—Saint‑Amans and Cabalsault—each from the 12th century and preserving sculpted capitals and decorative stonework. Modern-day Castelculier blends heritage with local activity centers such as creative cooking workshops at L’atelier de Dorie, family entertainment venues like Monster Games Laser, and outdoor paths linking villages across the Lot‑et‑Garonne. With its combination of archaeology, quiet landscapes, and proximity to Agen, Castelculier offers a soft, historically rich stop in southwestern France.
