Cholet: A Thriving Textile & Industrial Hub in Western France

Located in the Pays de la Loire region, Maine‑et‑Loire department, Cholet is a dynamic sub‑prefecture in western France. The town stands on the banks of the Moine River, at the crossroads of Anjou, Poitou and Brittany, shaping its blend of cultural influences. First mentioned in the 11th century, its name likely derives from Latin cauletum (“cabbage”), referencing ancient local farming. Historically, Cholet prospered as a linen‑weaving center; later, cotton, clothing and shoe industries developed. The town was heavily damaged during the Wars of the Vendée (1793–1796) and rebuilt mainly in the 19th century. Its landmark is the Église du Sacré‑Cœur (1939), a modern Romano‑Byzantine church dominating the skyline. Economically, Cholet is a diversified industrial hub with electronics, plastics, machinery, food processing and tire manufacturing, plus a strong logistics and services sector. It is famous for Cholet Basket, one of France’s top professional basketball teams. Today, Cholet balances historical heritage, industrial dynamism, natural spaces and modern urban life, making it a key city in western France.
